Phelps is honoured to support Indigenous and First Nations-led organizations in identifying and developing leaders who reflect the values, traditions, and self-determined priorities of their communities. Our work in indigenous leadership development is grounded in respect for Indigenous knowledge systems and a commitment to community-led solutions.
We partner with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit organizations, tribal councils, and urban Indigenous agencies across Canada—recognizing the distinct histories, governance models, and cultural protocols within and between Nations. Through first nations governance consulting, we support Nations in strengthening leadership capacity, advancing self-governance, and aligning leadership with long-term community priorities.
Our approach to indigenous executive recruitment is rooted in relationship-building, cultural humility, and deep listening. Leadership selection in this context is often a reflection of community-defined vision, Nation-building, and stewardship. We honour this by engaging respectfully with each Nation’s leadership protocols and governance traditions.
We also deliver aboriginal leadership training designed to nurture emerging leaders and support succession planning grounded in cultural continuity and lived community experience.
As part of our first nations advisory services, we engage Elders and Knowledge Keepers in the search process, where appropriate, to ensure that leadership decisions reflect ancestral wisdom, traditional structures, and long-term community well-being.
